Final mixes have now been mastered!
After Devon signed off on the final mixes, I sent them all to Andy Krehm (Silverbirch Productions) on Tuesday morning, 7-Mar-2016, to be mastered. Mastering is the final sweetening of the songs to take them from a good mix (instrument levels balanced) to a finished radio-ready recording. A little while after Andy got to work, he let me know that there were some mechanical clicks in the song “Swimming”! It turns out it was those sliding sounds you get when you move your fingers from chord to chord on an acoustic guitar. I didn’t realize that sound was so annoying (if overdone). Hours later, I had all the guitar noise out, except for a little, so it still sounds like an acoustic guitar. It was a harrowing week. I had no idea how many tweaks I would have to do to the mixes to get them just right. Then Andy would re-master each track I re-submitted. Also, it was a lot more work (and much of it under time pressure) to proof (listen and sign-off on) the masters, until I had the seven songs songs sounding good enough to put our name on them.
